I think the main issue facing agriculture is…

Old MacDonald had a farm, but what will Young MacDonald have?

A fine life as he or she adapts the old man’s farm to new markets and growing demand for rural amenities?

A barren field poisoned by overuse of chemicals?

Constant worry climate change will provoke drought or flooding or bring a new pest?

An enviable bank balance after selling the farm to a real estate developer?

A thriving business supplying feedstock to the local biofuels refinery?

The satisfaction of supplying high-quality organic produce?

Take the poll and tell us what you think the main issue for agriculture will be over the coming decades. You can choose more than one answer.

Agriculture ministers from OECD and non-OECD countries are meeting in Paris on 25-26 February. You can find meeting documents and information here.

Agricultural produce is mainly classified into two (1) Commercial (2) Food. Now a bifurcation of Food into some two classes. (1) Subsistance Food (2)Exotic food or Food for pleasure of senses. We should have policies related to these two types clearly distinguished by liberal state subsidies for Subsistance Food production. The governments should transfer large chunks of the general reserve of land to co-operatives exclusively for production of Subsistance food. The other type of agricultural production activity can be coupled with the normal agricultural marketing networks in the normal way. Probably a radical change of this type may address the problem of hunger in a better manner
